This is one of the questions we’re asked most often by international guests at Grace Kimono Salon.
Although both are traditional Japanese garments, there are actually differences in the seasons they’re worn, their purposes, and the materials used.
First, a yukata is a casual Japanese garment designed to be enjoyed in the summer. Made from breathable materials like cotton or linen, it’s popular for casual summer activities such as summer festivals, fireworks displays, and strolling through the streets of Kyoto. A unique feature of the yukata is that it’s worn barefoot with geta sandals, without tabi socks.
On the other hand, the kimono is a traditional Japanese garment that can be worn year-round. There is a wide variety of kimonos, ranging from those worn for everyday outings to formal attire for occasions such as weddings and tea ceremonies. It is customary to wear tabi socks with zori sandals, and there is a culture of enjoying different styles of kimono to match Japan’s four seasons and various events.
To put it simply,
yukata is “traditional Japanese attire for enjoying summer,” while kimono is “traditional Japanese attire for enjoying the four seasons.”
It might be easier to understand if you keep that image in mind.
